As the earth gets warmer, more and more people are endangered since extreme heat affects public health, economic productivity, extreme weather, and the food supply chain.  Las Vegas and Reno are the fastest warming cities in the United States.

Effects of Global Warming

  • Last year, for the first time, Clark County issued a blanket air quality advisory for the entire hot season, from April 1 to September 30.
  • Las Vegas is the 11th-worst city in the nation for ozone pollution.
  • According to NASA, 20 of the 21 hottest years ever measured have been since 2002; the eight hottest of all have been the last nine years.
  • Worldwide, air pollution from fossil fuels kills 9 million people every year.

Extreme Weather

  • Extreme weather events cause damage to infrastructure, roads, communities, homes, sewage systems, and building foundations.
  • Globally, floods and extreme rainfall events now occur four times more often than in 1980.
  • There have been twenty-two 1-in-1,000-year downpour events in the United States in the last 12 years.
  • Extreme weather costs in the United States exceeded a record $742 billion over the last six years.
